Piano music conceived/ composed/ recorded in real time on Yamaha baby grand- 2004 Tulelake, l to r: Anders Tomlinson, Denver Clay, Robert Ganey at Tulelake CA farm in 2004. Photo by Anders Tomlinson.using a Tascam DA-P1  DAT professional field recorder, Mackie 14 channel mixer with 6 XLR mic inputs, stereo mic and shotgun mic. Anders and Robert Ganey drove me to Bob and Patsy Gasser’s beautiful ranch house in Merrill, Oregon. After a quick soundcheck, he and Robert left me alone for the day to commune with a beautiful five foot Yamaha baby grand, made in Hamamatsu Japan, January 1981. When seated on the piano bench, my view was of magnificent Mt.Shasta, 30 miles away, framed by floor to ceiling windows. My plan that day was to have no plan;  just channel and flow the cosmic muse while capturing the sounds to tape. I love to create in from that mode, free of mental details and thinking too much. Just surrender to the virtuosic universe, and immerse… Denver Clay

Nourish melody 0:35Music is part and parcel of rural America. It is a way to entertain oneself and others. It is part of the home, school and church. And it fills the cab of pickup as the farmers travel to, from and in the fields. In rural America getting a haircut, going to the store, eating out or going to a concert is usually a long drive. Part of a farmer’s life is music. Flanking the farm where Denver and Robert came to visit me were two houses, each a mile away, each with a tuned baby grand. Patsy’s piano was four miles away on the other side of the border in Oregon. Recording in farmland is a wonderful thing… Anders Tomlinson

Music is influenced by its topographical birthplace. In the flat Australian desert it is only natural that the didgeridoo would produce long drawn Robert Ganey playing guitar at the Tulelake, CA farm. Photo by Anders Tomlinson.out expansive earth tones while the lilting sound of a ukulele is the perfect choice for Hawaiian natives surrounded by water. As musical tones evoke certain colors, the environment in which we create lends itself to the composition. The California / Oregon border boasts open fields and farmlands, volcanic terrains with lakes and waterways against the backdrop of the Cascades and big Oregon sky. Denver’ s musical choices paint a picture of these beautiful landscapes.
The multi-texture of the Yamaha Baby Grand piano recorded with various mic placements sound right at home with the birds and wildlife, changing seasons and grand diversity of this region. As a listener I am amazed at the power and serenity one can hear from hands touching black and white keys… Robert Ganey
