The bottom view is from Horse<br \/>\n Mountain looking east. Either view is of a big landscape with little visible<br \/>\n presence of man.  The largest recent change in modern times is the growing expanse<br \/>\n of juniper. Clear Lake Refuge, established in 1911, consists of approximately<br \/>\n 20,000 acres of open water surrounded by over 26,000 acres of upland bunchgrass,<br \/>\n low sagebrush, and juniper habitat. The upland areas provide habitat for pronghorn<br \/>\n antelope, mule deer, and sage grouse.  The Clear Lake Reservoir is the primary source<br \/>\n of water for the agricultural program of the eastern half of the Upper Klamath Basin,<br \/>\n with water levels regulated by the Bureau of Reclamation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/anderstomlinson.com\/tule-lake\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/date-unknown.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/anderstomlinson.com\/tule-lake\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/date-unknown.jpg\" alt=\"view of the clear lake area in the early 1900&#039;s.  exact date is unknown.  modoc county, california.  tulelake california.  photos by anders tomlinson.\" width=\"600\" height=\"333\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/anderstomlinson.com\/tule-lake\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/date-unknown.jpg 600w, https:\/\/anderstomlinson.com\/tule-lake\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/date-unknown-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Looking Back At the Way It Was On An Unknown Date &#8211;<\/strong><br \/>\nPrior to the construction of the dam in 1910, a natural lake and meadow existed<br \/>\n above the dam-site.  The meadow was seasonally grazed by the Carr Livestock Company.<br \/>\n During most years, the Lost River below the present dam ran dry from June through<br \/>\n October. Today, Clear Lake Refuge is managed as a natural sagebrush\/grassland plant<br \/>\n community by using a combination of livestock grazing and prescribed fire.<br \/>\n Approximately 600 Animal Unit Months, government speak, of permitted cattle grazing<br \/>\n occurs on the &#8220;U&#8221; portion of the refuge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/anderstomlinson.com\/tule-lake\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/clear-lake-graphic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/anderstomlinson.com\/tule-lake\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/clear-lake-graphic.jpg\" alt=\"map of water levels in the tule lake and clear lake basins in 1846.\" width=\"600\" height=\"333\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/anderstomlinson.com\/tule-lake\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/clear-lake-graphic.jpg 600w, https:\/\/anderstomlinson.com\/tule-lake\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/clear-lake-graphic-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>First There Were Indians and Then Came Settlers By Wagon Train &#8211;<\/strong><br \/>\nIt is easy to forget modern times when one is near Clear lake National Wildlife Refuge.<br \/>\n   The Warner Mountains are to the east and a ridge, Tule Lake Basin, Lower Klamath<br \/>\n Basin and the southern Cascades Mountains are to the west. The word tranquility<br \/>\n comes to mind but the reality is this is a landscape with a volcanic past. During fall and spring migrations Canada geese and many duck species<br \/>\n visit the lake. An average of 1,000 white pelicans and 500 cormorants are<br \/>\n fledged annually. Pelican banding at the &#8220;Clear<br \/>\n Lake Corral.&#8221;  United States Fish and Wildlife have been banding young pelicans<br \/>\n at Clear Lake since 1963. Time is measured<br \/>\n by one&#8217;s breathing like flowers moving with a breeze.  Here, Indians and wagon train<br \/>\n settlers left marks of other ages. Clear Lake National Wildlife Refuge is more than<br \/>\n protected, it is removed from development &#8211; here spirits recall hunters and trappers<br \/>\n making the best of a hard go. Both the Clear Lake area and Lava Beds National Monument have large expanse of this habitat.
