The Universe is Always Ready

14 – Davey Crocket’s Dream 5:26

In 1986 or 1987, my “rig” centered around an Ensoniq ESQ-1 multi timbral workstation which is where I did my sequencing and was MIDI master. I ran a MIDI cable out of that into a little 4×4 MIDI switcher, which hubbed out to everything else running as MIDI slaves- Mirage Sampler, Obergeim Matrix 6, and a drum machine. and a Roland TR808 drum machine that had its own sequencer and pattern data onboard. It synced to MIDI clock, so it was always play in time. Sometimes I would inadvertently have the wrong drum patterns assigned to the music, but the unexpected results were often dazzling examples of the creatively musical universe and the syncronicity of it all. The universe is always ready to play with you, you just need to be loose and playful and open to all outcomes, to invite and recognize those fortuitous accidents.

Davey’s Beginning 0:35The driving rhythm bed in this track manifested in such a way.  It serves as a freewheeling anchor for numerous overdub passes on various instruments, and spread over 25+ years. Same applies to the ambient and sound effects / sound design layers weaving.
Something about this track reminds me of a major influence upon my musical journey.  I’d like to thank the late Don Ellis and The Don Ellis Orchestra Live In 3 2/3s / 4 Time.  I wore out albums of his music, listening for hours and hours, deep immersion questing to musically understand what was going on.  Unlimited time signature variations inspired by Indian ragas; an entire trumpet section tooled with quarter tone trumpets, custom built by Selmer to his specs. Master the rules, and then break them. (credits also to John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Miles Davis Bitches Brew)… Denver Clay

Davey’s Mocking Alarm 0:38Davey Crockett’s Dream is one of my favorite names in the Lava Songs portfolio. What do these words mean to you? What do they mean to me? All-in- all, Davey Crockett’s Dream is an industrial-grade sonic construction: garbage truck on its rounds, car alarm going off along with a featured neighborhood mocking bird – all help bone and weave this audio tapestry. There are secret places within this mix that only willing imaginations can visit.
Here is a world where the loquacious mocking bird has borrower from the ubiquitous car alarm, Here, nothing and all is sacred… Anders Tomlinson
